Taking the fear out of travelling to russia

Applying for a Russian Tourist Visa
in 2025

Applying for a Russian visa can seem daunting, but it doesn’t have to be. I'll guide you step-by-step and give you practical tips to make the process smooth and stress-free.

Introduction

I still remember the first time I applied for a Russian tourist visa… I’ll be honest...I felt completely lost. What forms did I need? Where was I supposed to go? And then came the scariest part: handing over my passport to a foreign government’s consulate for weeks on end. It was nerve-racking, to say the least!
Of course once I set foot in Russia for the first time, every form and all the double checking was completely worth it.

And that’s why I love guiding my guests through the process: I know how confusing it looks from the outside, but I promise you that the reward waiting on the other side is completely worth it.

So, on that note, congratulations! You’ve decided to make the plunge and travel to Russia in 2025. In this guide, I’ll walk you step-by-step through the visa process for travellers from countries not currently eligible for the e-Visa program, these include:
  • Australia
  • Canada
  • New Zealand
  • United Kingdom
  • United States
Let’s make sure you know exactly what to expect so you can focus on the fun part…planning your Russian adventure!

Step 1: Confirm You Meet the
Pre-Requisites

Before you get too far, check these essentials:
  • Passport validity – Your passport must be valid for at least 6 months after leaving Russia. If you need a renewal, do this early.
  • Visa photo – Russia is strict about photo requirements. Get a professional photo done (post offices or camera shops usually offer this). Don’t DIY! It’s not worth the rejection risk. Here’s a handy guide.
  • Be ready to part with your passport – The consulate will hold your passport for 2–3 weeks during processing. If you have other international trips planned, consider timing carefully or paying for express processing.

Step 2: Get Your Invitation

Western travellers must have a formal invitation letter from a registered tour operator or hotel.
  • If you’re travelling with YouAndMe.Travel, we’ll take care of this for you.
  • If planning independently, use a third-party service like iVisa or Russia Support. Expect to pay around €17. When using these services you’ll usually get your electronic invitation within 10–15 minutes.
You’ll need to list the cities you plan to visit (don’t worry, changes are usually fine later).

Step 3: Arrange Travel Insurance

Russian tourist visas require medical insurance valid in Russia. Due to sanctions, many Western insurance companies (including those tied to credit cards) won’t cover Russia anymore.

We recommend the insurance provided via VisaToRus, because it is backed by AlfaStrakhovanie, one of Russia’s largest and most reputable insurers. It’s competitively priced and accepted by the consulates.

Step 4: Complete the Online Visa Application

Head to the official Russian visa portal: https://visa.kdmid.ru/.
You’ll fill in:
  • Personal details
  • Planned travel dates and cities
  • Recent travel history
  • Background/security questions
Pro tip: Add a couple of “buffer days” before and after your trip dates. If your flights change or plans shift, your visa will still cover you.

Step 5: Submit Your Application

Once the online form is done, print it and take it to your local visa processing centre (or consulate/embassy if they handle applications directly. Always check appointment rules first).
You’ll need:
  • Invitation letter
  • Completed and signed application form
  • Visa photo (glued, not stapled)
  • Proof of travel insurance
Fees (approximate 2025):
  • AUD $120 at a consulate
  • +$150 if you use a third-party visa service

Step 6: Collect Your Visa

After 2–3 weeks, you’ll get an SMS or email to pick up your passport. Check it carefully on the spot:
  • Is your name spelled correctly?
  • Do the visa dates match your trip (plus buffer days)?
Any error needs fixing before you fly.
